CHILD SPONSORSHIP
NOT FOR US
One Thousand Villages does not offer child sponsorship. Child sponsorship, though well-intentioned, can create various issues within communities.
Here are some reasons why we do not support child sponsorship:
- Competitiveness for sponsorship: Child sponsorship can lead to competition among children within a community, creating divisions and jealousy.
- Reliance on external support: Relying solely on external sponsors can hinder the community’s efforts to become self-sustainable in the long run.
- Dishonest and exploitative treatment of children: In some cases, children may be exploited or treated unfairly to attract sponsors, which goes against our values of child protection and empowerment.
With decades of experience working in villages across Southeast Asia, we understand the challenges of child sponsorship. Instead, we collaborate closely with village leaders, schools, and families to develop sustainable solutions that do not rely on external funding. Our focus is on empowering people to build the skills and confidence they need to be self-sufficient and resilient.
